Taverne Square Dominion

After a day of shopping with my beautiful bestie Elisa (my fellow make-up loving shoe maniac, Zara enthusiast), we were absolutely famished and in need of some good grub. As we walked along St. Catherine, passing several restaurants, none managed to allure us. The spread of dining establishments in downtown Montreal (or at least the heart of downtown) are typically disappointing to me. Many are too commercial or predictable and just lack the charm that other neighborhoods offer. Finally, I remembered a place from my lengthy list of restaurants to try: Taverne Square Dominion.

Located right off St. Catherine, tucked away on Rue Metcalfe, lies this beautiful tavern, whose infrastructure boasts its rich history. Upon entering, the antique décor, from the original chandeliers to the timeworn mirrors, immediately transports you to the 1920s, when it served as the adjacent hotel restaurant.

We sat at the bar while we waited for a table, scanning the drink menu. I excitedly ordered the Pimm’s Cup Deluxe, while Elisa opted for a glass of wine. The “deluxe” element of the Pimm’s Cup was the addition of Prosecco. It was the perfect touch of fizz to complement the crisp, citrusy refreshment.

Shortly after, we were seated at a table by our friendly waiter. In fact, all aspects of the service that evening were outstanding. With our bellies rumbling, we scoured the menu of British fare, deciding we would be in need of an appetizer. I had heard good things about the Corn Fritters so we had to give those a try. The warm, deep-fried bites of sweet corn were heavenly. They reminded me of traditional corn fritters from the South.

For our main courses, I decided on the Pan Seared Salmon, and Elisa went with the Braised Beef Top Blade. My salmon was superb. The skin was perfectly crunchy. And the topping, which I believe was crispy capers (I’m really not sure?...whatever it was, I wanted more!), brought a salty punch to each bite. Elisa adored her meal. The beef was wonderfully prepared; it was fork-tender and just melted in your mouth – the perfect hearty ending to a chilly evening.

After our terrific experience at Taverne Square Dominion, I would certainly recommend it to everyone. The dim (read: flattering) lighting would definitely be the perfect ambience for a romantic date night ;)
